Biography

Maxime Maufra (1861-1918) was a French landscape and marine painter, etcher, and lithographer who played a significant role in the Pont-Aven School, a group of artists influenced by Impressionism and Synthetism. Renowned for his vibrant colors, bold brushwork, and ability to capture atmospheric scenes, Maufra left an indelible mark on the Post-Impressionist movement.

Born in Nantes, France, in 1861, Maufra initially followed a path in business before fully embracing his artistic aspirations in 1890. Drawn to the vibrant artistic community of Pont-Aven in Brittany, he immersed himself in the creative milieu, encountering prominent figures like Paul Gauguin and Paul Sérusier, who profoundly impacted his artistic development.

Maufra's artistic growth accelerated in the early 1890s as he experimented with various techniques, including Pointillism and Cloisonnism, which he infused into his landscapes and marine paintings, soon becoming his defining style. His works were characterized by a bold use of color, a sense of movement and depth, and a captivating portrayal of the natural world.

In 1894, Maufra gained recognition with his participation in the Salon des Indépendants in Paris, showcasing his talent to a wider audience. He continued to exhibit regularly and was awarded a gold medal at the Exposition Universelle in 1900, further solidifying his reputation as a prominent artist.

Throughout his career, Maufra remained dedicated to his artistic pursuits, capturing the essence of the Breton landscape and the ever-changing moods of the sea. His paintings exude a sense of tranquility and vibrancy, inviting viewers to immerse themselves in the beauty of the natural world.

Tragically, Maufra's life was cut short in 1918 when he passed away at the age of 57 in Poncé-sur-le-Loire, France.
