Biography

Maurice Utrillo (1883–1955) was a French painter known for his distinctive depictions of the streets and neighborhoods of Montmartre in Paris. Born Maurice Valadon on December 26, 1883, in Montmartre, Utrillo was the illegitimate son of the artist Suzanne Valadon. Despite his challenging upbringing and struggles with mental health, Utrillo became a prominent figure in the Montmartre artistic community.

Utrillo's early life was marked by difficulties, including alcoholism and mental health issues. He discovered his passion for art under the guidance of his mother, Suzanne Valadon, who was an accomplished artist herself. Utrillo began painting in his early twenties, initially working in a Fauvist style before finding his own distinctive approach.

The artist's preferred subject matter was the streets, houses, and landmarks of Montmartre, the bohemian neighborhood where he spent much of his life. Utrillo's paintings are characterized by their subdued color palette, meticulous attention to architectural details, and a sense of quietude.
