Biography

The Belgian painter Maurice Sijs (1880-1972) was a painter and draftsman who specialized in marine and landscape painting. He is best known for his realistic and detailed paintings of the Belgian coast and the Scheldt River.

Sijs was born in Antwerp, Belgium, in 1880. He studied art at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp. After graduating, he traveled to the Netherlands and France, where he was influenced by the work of the Impressionists and Post-Impressionists.

Sijs returned to Belgium in the early 1900s and settled in the coastal town of Ostend. He began painting the local landscape and the people who lived and worked there. He was particularly interested in painting the fishing boats and the fishermen who worked on them.

Sijs exhibited his work at major galleries in Belgium and abroad. He was a successful painter, and his work is now held in public and private collections around the world.

Sijs died in Ostend in 1972. He is considered to be one of the most important Belgian marine and landscape painters of the 20th century.
