The Macchiaioli, an artistic movement of the 19th century in Italy, is distinguished by its innovative approach to the representation of reality. Macchiaioli artists pay particular attention to the effects of light, using bright, vibrant splashes of color to capture everyday scenes, especially outdoors. These artists seek to paint snapshots of life, landscapes or portraits, using distinct strokes of color that, up close, appear messy (macchie meaning "spots" in Italian) but which, from a distance, take shape to create a lively and dynamic representation. The movement had a significant impact on painting, contributing to the transition between academic realism and the emergence of modern art. The Macchiaioli are considered precursors of Impressionism because of their innovative approach to color and light, marking an important turning point in the history of pictorial art.
