Biography

Silvestro Lega (1826–1895) was an Italian painter associated with the Macchiaioli movement, a group of 19th-century Italian artists who rebelled against academic conventions and embraced a more naturalistic and plein air approach to painting. Born in Modigliana, Lega received formal training at the Academy of Fine Arts in Florence but eventually moved away from academic traditions in favor of a more realist and progressive style.

Lega's early works were influenced by the revolutionary spirit of the mid-19th century, and he found inspiration in the social and political changes sweeping through Italy. He joined the Macchiaioli, a group of like-minded artists, and became a key figure in their pursuit of a new, more modern approach to art. The term "Macchiaioli" refers to the artists' use of the "macchia," or patch, a technique emphasizing the application of color in distinct brushstrokes to capture the essence of light and atmosphere.

Lega's paintings often depicted scenes of everyday life, rural landscapes, and portraits.
