Biography

Henri Manguin (1874–1949) was a French painter associated with the Fauvist movement, a group of artists known for their bold use of color and innovative approach to form. Born in Paris, Manguin's artistic journey unfolded during a dynamic period in French art at the turn of the 20th century.

Manguin studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, where he met and formed lasting friendships with other avant-garde artists, including Henri Matisse and Albert Marquet. Together, they would become key figures in the Fauvist movement, characterized by vibrant colors, spontaneous brushwork, and a departure from naturalistic representation.

In 1905, Manguin participated in the pivotal Salon d'Automne exhibition, where the term "Fauvism" was coined due to the bold and unconventional use of color by the artists. Manguin's paintings from this period, such as "La Musique" (1907) and "Luxe, Calme, et Volupté" (1904-1905), exemplify his mastery of color and his ability to infuse his works with a sense of rhythm and harmony.
