Biography

Albert Marquet (1875–1947) was a French painter associated with the Fauvist movement and known for his depictions of urban scenes, landscapes, and seascapes. Born in Bordeaux, France, Marquet showed an early interest in art and moved to Paris to pursue his studies at the École des Beaux-Arts.

Marquet's early works were influenced by the Post-Impressionist and Symbolist movements, but he would find his artistic voice and gain prominence as a member of the Fauvist movement. Fauvism, characterized by its bold use of color and emphasis on emotional expression, included artists like Henri Matisse and André Derain. Marquet's contributions to Fauvism were marked by his interest in light and color, using vivid hues to convey the mood and atmosphere of his subjects.

One of Marquet's significant associations was with the painter Henri Matisse.
