Biography
Zao Wou-Ki (1920–2013) was a Chinese-French abstract painter known for his unique fusion of Eastern and Western artistic traditions. Born on February 13, 1920, in Beijing, China, Zao Wou-Ki played a pivotal role in the development of modern art, particularly abstract painting, and became one of the most celebrated Chinese artists of the 20th century.

Zao's artistic journey began in China, where he received formal training in traditional Chinese ink painting and calligraphy. However, his interest in Western art led him to move to Paris in 1948. This relocation marked a significant turning point in his artistic career and allowed him to immerse himself in the dynamic European art scene.

In Paris, Zao was exposed to the works of European modernists and Abstract Expressionists, such as Paul Klee, Joan Miró, and Wassily Kandinsky. His encounters with these influences, combined with his deep-rooted understanding of Chinese artistic traditions, shaped his distinctive style.

Zao Wou-Ki's paintings are characterized by a harmonious blend of abstract forms, gestural brushwork, and a vibrant palette. His compositions often evoke a sense of fluidity and movement, capturing the essence of nature, landscapes, and the dynamic interplay of color and light. His works reflect both the spontaneity of Abstract Expressionism and the meditative qualities of traditional Chinese art.

Throughout his career, Zao experimented with various techniques and mediums, transitioning from ink and brush to oil on canvas. He became associated with the lyrical abstraction movement, and his art evolved over the years, reflecting the changing artistic landscape.

Zao Wou-Ki's contributions to the art world were widely recognized, and his works were exhibited in major galleries and museums around the world. He received numerous awards and honors, including being elected as a member of the Académie des Beaux-Arts in France.

Zao Wou-Ki passed away on April 9, 2013, in Nyon, Switzerland, leaving behind a rich legacy as a bridge between Eastern and Western artistic traditions. His art continues to be celebrated for its transcendent and universal qualities, demonstrating the power of cross-cultural dialogue in shaping the course of modern art.
