Yves Tanguy was a French surrealist painter known for his enigmatic and dreamlike landscapes, characterized by otherworldly forms and meticulously detailed imaginary scenes. Born on January 5, 1900, in Paris, Tanguy's artistic career emerged during the heyday of the Surrealist movement in the early 20th century.

Initially, Tanguy pursued a career as a merchant mariner, spending time sailing across the Atlantic. However, his experiences at sea deeply influenced his artistic imagination, and he began painting in the late 1920s after being exposed to Surrealist ideas and works by artists like Giorgio de Chirico and Salvador Dalí.

Tanguy's paintings often featured strange, biomorphic shapes and fantastical landscapes that seemed to defy the laws of nature. His meticulous rendering of forms and the precision of his technique contributed to the dreamlike quality of his works.
