Biography
Gustaaf van de Wall Perné (1875-1958) was a Dutch landscape painter, illustrator, and printmaker. He painted in a style that was influenced by Symbolism and the Art Nouveau movement.

Perné was born in Gorinchem, Netherlands, in 1875. He studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Amsterdam from 1895 to 1900. After graduating, he traveled to France and Belgium, where he was influenced by the work of Symbolist painters such as Gustave Moreau and Odilon Redon. He also became interested in the Art Nouveau movement, which was popular in Europe at the time.

Perné returned to the Netherlands in 1902 and settled in the village of Blaricum. He began to paint landscapes of the surrounding countryside, which were characterized by their mystical and dreamlike atmosphere. He often used muted colors and soft brushwork to create a sense of mystery and intrigue.

In addition to landscapes, Perné also painted portraits, still lifes, and genre scenes. He also produced a large number of illustrations for books and magazines. His illustrations were often characterized by their decorative quality and their use of imaginative motifs.

Perné was a member of the Amsterdam artist group De Groep, which was founded in 1918. He exhibited his work widely in the Netherlands and abroad, and he was awarded the prestigious Dutch Wisselpendning prize in 1932. He received many honors for his work.

Perné is considered one of the most important Dutch painters of the early 20th century. His work is characterized by its symbolism, its use of color and light, and its mystical atmosphere. He is also known for his versatility as an artist, and he made significant contributions to the fields of landscape painting, illustration, and printmaking.

Perné's work is held in several collections, including the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam, and the Kröller-Müller Museum in Otterlo.
