Biography

Karen Elisabeth Tornøe (1847-1933)

Karen Elisabeth Tornøe was a Danish painter, born in Horsens, Denmark, on September 18, 1847. She died in Frederikssund, Denmark, on August 1, 1933.

She was the daughter of merchant Samuel Blumer and Bolette Marie Abigael, née Wendelboe. She received instruction in drawing and perspective at Horsens Technical School. As a painter, she was self-taught, except for later guidance from her husband, the painter Wenzel Tornøe. In 1879, the couple took a study trip to Italy.

Like many other female artists of her time, Elisabeth Tornøe stood in the shadow of her husband. As a result, her art is sparse and difficult to determine stylistically. It follows the stylistic trends of the time.

In 1874, she exhibited anonymously at the Charlottenborg Spring Exhibition, which was listed in the catalog as "Unknown." In the years 1884, 1885, 1892, and 1893, she exhibited again at the Spring Exhibition, this time under her own name. In 1895, she participated in the Women's Exhibition at Den Fries Udstillingsbygning in Copenhagen with her portrait of an old man. After 1895, she painted only privately.

Here are some additional details about her work:
Her paintings are mostly portraits, landscapes, and still lifes.
She often used a light and delicate touch, with a focus on detail.
Her work is characterized by its realism and attention to detail.

Elisabeth Tornøe is a significant figure in Danish art history. She was one of the few female artists of her time to receive professional training and exhibit her work in public. Her work is a valuable contribution to the canon of Danish art.
