Biography

Peter Tom-Petersen (March 5, 1861 – July 27, 1926) was a Danish painter and graphic artist known primarily for his cityscapes, interiors, and architectural paintings. His signature, "Tom P.," became so well-known that he legally changed his name to Peter Tom-Petersen in 1920.

Born Peter Thomsen Petersen in Thisted, Denmark, Tom-Petersen showed an early talent for art. He began painting and drawing at a young age, and he attended grammar school in Maribo from 1876 to 1879. After graduating, he moved to Copenhagen to study at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts.

Tom-Petersen was a diligent student, and he quickly developed a strong technical skill. He also had a keen eye for detail and a deep appreciation for the beauty of the natural world. These qualities are evident in his early landscape paintings, which often capture the quiet beauty of the Danish countryside.

In the early 1890s, Tom-Petersen began to focus on painting cityscapes. He was particularly interested in capturing the atmosphere of Copenhagen's bustling streets and squares. His cityscapes are characterized by their vivid colors, lively brushwork, and sense of perspective.

Tom-Petersen also painted interiors and architectural subjects. He was fascinated by the complex forms and textures of buildings, and he often painted them in a way that emphasizes their geometric shapes. His architectural paintings are notable for their precision and detail.

In addition to his paintings, Tom-Petersen was also an accomplished etcher. He produced over 300 etchings, many of which depict the same subjects as his paintings. His etchings are characterized by their fine lines and delicate shading.

Tom-Petersen was a respected and influential figure in Danish art. He was a member of the Charlottenborg Exhibition Committee from 1910 to 1915, and he was a founding member of the Graphic Artists' Society in 1909. He also served on the board of the Faaborg Museum from 1910 to 1926.

Tom-Petersen's work is held in several collections, including the National Gallery of Denmark, the Statens Museum for Kunst, and the Faaborg Museum.
