Theodor Severin Kittelsen (1857–1914) was a Norwegian painter and illustrator known for his enchanting depictions of folklore, fairy tales, and the mystical landscapes of his native Norway. Born in Kragerø, Kittelsen displayed artistic talent from an early age and eventually became one of the leading figures in the Norwegian Symbolist movement.Kittelsen's art often drew inspiration from Norwegian folklore and mythology. He had a deep affinity for the country's rich storytelling traditions, and his works frequently featured trolls, mythical creatures, and scenes from folklore. His illustrations for the fairy tales of Asbjørnsen and Moe, two collectors of Norwegian folktales, are particularly celebrated for their evocative and imaginative qualities.
One of Kittelsen's most iconic creations is the character "Nøkken," a water spirit often depicted as a malevolent force in bodies of water. Kittelsen's portrayal of Nøkken and other mythical beings reflects his ability to infuse his art with a sense of mystery and magic.
