Marie Spartali Stillman was a British Pre-Raphaelite painter and an important figure in the late 19th-century art scene. Born on March 10, 1844, in London, she was the daughter of Michael Spartali, a wealthy Greek merchant, and Christina Spartali, a member of the prominent artistic and literary Greek-Italian family. Marie Spartali Stillman made a significant mark as a painter, especially within the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, despite not being an official member.

Educated in England and Europe, Spartali Stillman was exposed to a rich cultural milieu. Her connection to the Pre-Raphaelite circle was strengthened through her family, as she was the niece of Christina Rossetti, a renowned poet and sister to Dante Gabriel Rossetti, one of the founders of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood.
