Biography
Jessie Willcox Smith (1863–1935) was an American illustrator and one of the leading female illustrators during the Golden Age of American illustration. Born on September 6, 1863, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, she became renowned for her contributions to children's literature, creating enchanting and iconic illustrations that continue to captivate audiences.Smith studied at the School of Design for Women (now Moore College of Art & Design) in Philadelphia. She began her career as a professional illustrator in the late 19th century, a time when the demand for illustrated books and magazines was on the rise. Her talent quickly garnered attention, and she became associated with notable publications, including St. Nicholas Magazine and Ladies' Home Journal.
One of Smith's most notable collaborations was with the publisher and editor Edward Bok, who commissioned her to illustrate children's books and stories. Her illustrations for Louisa May Alcott's "Little Women" and Frances Hodgson Burnett's "A Little Princess" are particularly celebrated for their evocative and timeless quality. Smith's art conveyed a sense of innocence, charm, and emotion, making her a beloved illustrator in the realm of children's literature.
