Sanford Robinson Gifford (1823–1880) was an American landscape painter and a prominent figure in the Hudson River School, a group of 19th-century American landscape painters known for their romantic and detailed portrayals of the American landscape.

Gifford was born in Greenfield, New York, and began his artistic education under the tutelage of landscape painter Thomas Cole, one of the founding figures of the Hudson River School. Gifford’s work was strongly influenced by the School’s belief in the spiritual and awe-inspiring qualities of nature.

He gained recognition for his skill in depicting the grandeur and vastness of the American landscape, particularly scenes of the Hudson River Valley, the White Mountains, the Catskills, and other regions. His paintings often featured dramatic lighting, expansive skies, and serene natural settings.
