Biography

Rowland Wheelwright (1870-1955) was an Australian-born British painter and illustrator. He depicted equestrian, historical, and maritime scenes in a diffuse pastel palette.

Wheelwright was born in Ipswich, Australia, to a family of sheep farmers. During the Australian drought of the 1880s, he moved to England with his family. He studied art at the St. John's Wood Art School and the Herkomer School of Art in Bushey, where he became acquainted with painters such as Lucy Kemp-Welch under the tutelage of Sir Hubert von Herkomer.

Wheelwright's paintings are characterized by their soft, muted colors and their realistic depiction of detail. He was particularly skilled at painting horses, and many of his works feature equestrian scenes. He also painted historical and maritime scenes, as well as portraits and landscapes.

Wheelwright died in Bushey, England, in 1955. He is considered to be one of the leading British painters of his generation.
