Biography

Robert Reid (1862–1929) was an American Impressionist painter and one of the prominent figures associated with The Ten American Painters, a group of artists who rebelled against the conservative artistic establishment in the early 20th century. Born in Stockbridge, Massachusetts, Reid showed an early interest in art and began his formal training at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston.

Reid continued his artistic education in Paris, studying at the Académie Julian and the École des Beaux-Arts. During his time in France, he was exposed to the Impressionist movement and the work of artists like Claude Monet and Pierre-Auguste Renoir, which had a profound influence on his artistic style.

Upon returning to the United States, Reid became part of the American art scene and joined The Ten American Painters, a group that sought to break away from the academic traditions and embrace more progressive and innovative approaches to art. The Ten, including artists like Childe Hassam and J. Alden Weir, exhibited together and played a crucial role in promoting Impressionism in America.

Reid's paintings often depicted scenes of domestic life, landscapes, and portraits, reflecting the influence of French Impressionism. His works were characterized by a vibrant use of color, loose brushwork, and a focus on capturing the effects of light and atmosphere.
