Biography
Robert Braithwaite Martineau (19 January 1826 – 13 February 1869) was an English Victorian painter who was associated with the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood. He was born in London, the son of a successful lawyer, and initially followed in his father's footsteps by studying law. However, he eventually decided to pursue a career in art, and in 1848 he entered the Royal Academy.

Martineau was influenced by the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, a group of artists who were dedicated to reviving the honesty and realism of early Renaissance art. He was particularly close to William Holman Hunt, one of the founders of the Brotherhood, and he even shared a studio with him for a time.

Martineau's paintings are characterized by their attention to detail, their use of bright colors, and their focus on historical and literary subjects. He is best known for his painting The Last Day in the Old Home, which depicts a family being forced to sell their possessions after the father loses his fortune.

Martineau died in London in 1869 at the age of 43. He is considered to be one of the most important Pre-Raphaelite painters, and his work is still admired today for its beauty and its technical brilliance.

Martineau's work is on display in many major museums around the world, including the Tate Gallery in London, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, and the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C.
