Biography

Briton Rivière (1840–1920) was a British artist known for his evocative paintings, particularly those depicting animals and scenes from literature and mythology. Born in London, Rivière came from a family with artistic connections, and he received early training under his father, William Rivière, a notable drawing master.

Rivière furthered his education at the Royal Academy Schools, where he developed his skills as a painter. He initially gained attention for his historical and literary subjects, often inspired by classical mythology and literature. His meticulous attention to detail and narrative storytelling in these works earned him recognition and popularity.

One of Rivière's most famous paintings is "Sympathy," which depicts a young girl comforting a wounded dog.
