Biography

Jean-François Raffaëlli (1850–1924) was a French painter, sculptor, and printmaker, best known for his depictions of Parisian life, particularly scenes of everyday people in urban settings. Born in Paris, Raffaëlli initially trained as a violinist but later turned to art, studying at the École des Beaux-Arts under the guidance of Gustave Courbet.

Raffaëlli emerged as a prominent figure during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, a period marked by significant social and artistic changes. He was associated with several art movements, including Realism and Naturalism, and he is often categorized as a painter of the Belle Époque.

One of Raffaëlli's notable contributions to art was his dedication to portraying the working class and the urban poor.
