Biography
Paul Mathey (1844-1929) was a French painter and engraver who gained recognition for his portraits and genre scenes. Born in Paris, Mathey developed his artistic talents at the École des Beaux-Arts, where he studied under renowned instructors like Léon Cogniet, Isidore Pils, and Alexis-Joseph Mazerolle.

Mathey's artistic journey began with his debut at the Salon de Paris in 1868. His works were well-received, and he quickly established himself as a sought-after portrait painter. His portraits were distinguished by their psychological depth, capturing the essence of his subjects with sensitivity and precision.

Beyond portraiture, Mathey also excelled in genre painting, depicting scenes of everyday life with a touch of realism and humor. His genre paintings often featured domestic settings and ordinary people engaged in their daily routines, reflecting his keen observation of human nature.
