Biography

Nicolas de Staël was a French-Russian painter known for his bold and expressive abstract works that bridged the gap between abstraction and representation. Born on January 5, 1914, in Saint Petersburg, Russia, as Nikolai Vladimirovich Stael von Holstein, he later adopted the French-sounding name Nicolas de Staël.

De Staël's family fled Russia during the Russian Revolution, and he eventually settled in France. His artistic education began at the Royal Academy of Arts in Brussels, where he studied under the Belgian painter and theorist Constant Montald. Early in his career, de Staël embraced figurative art and became associated with the School of Paris.

The artist's work evolved significantly in the post-war period, marked by a shift towards abstraction. His paintings from the late 1940s and early 1950s are characterized by thick impasto, vibrant colors, and a dynamic interplay of forms. De Staël's style is often associated with abstract expressionism, though his works maintain a connection to recognizable subjects, particularly landscapes and still lifes.
