Nicolaas van der Waay (1855–1936) was a Dutch painter, illustrator, and decorative artist known for his contributions to late 19th and early 20th-century Dutch art. Born on May 15, 1855, in Amsterdam, van der Waay played a significant role in the cultural and artistic life of his time, making his mark in various artistic endeavors.

Van der Waay initially studied at the Rijksakademie van beeldende kunsten (State Academy of Fine Arts) in Amsterdam, where he received formal training in painting. He later continued his studies in Paris, a city that served as a thriving center for artistic innovation during that period.

As an artist, van der Waay excelled in portraiture, genre scenes, and historical paintings. His early works were influenced by the academic tradition, but he later embraced the ideas of the Hague School, a Dutch movement that emphasized realism and a connection to everyday life.

In addition to his achievements in traditional painting, van der Waay gained recognition for his contributions to decorative arts and applied arts.
