Movement definition
The New Objectivity art movement emerged in the interwar period, primarily in Germany. It developed in reaction to the expressionist ideals of the time. It was a reaffirmation of realism and objectivity in art, seeking to capture an accurate and often unvarnished representation of reality. In painting, this movement is characterized by a distinctly figurative style, clear lines and an almost photographic approach to subjects. New Objectivity artists tended to depict urban scenes, portraits or landscapes in a sober, almost clinical manner, reflecting post-war harshness and social realities. The goal was to capture everyday life, including the less attractive sides or social tensions, without idealization. The New Objectivity embodied a crude realism and social critique that moved away from emotion and subjectivism, insisting instead on an accurate and unbiased representation of reality.
