Biography

Mark Rothko (1903–1970) was a renowned American abstract expressionist painter of Latvian Jewish descent. Born Markus Yakovlevich Rothkowitz in Dvinsk (now Daugavpils, Latvia), Rothko later emigrated with his family to the United States, where he became a key figure in the mid-20th-century art world.

Rothko's early artistic career saw him experiment with various styles, including mythological and surrealist themes. However, it was his exploration of color and form in the 1940s that would define his distinctive style. Alongside fellow artists like Jackson Pollock and Willem de Kooning, Rothko became associated with the abstract expressionist movement, which emphasized spontaneous, gestural painting and emotional intensity.

One of Rothko's most significant contributions to art was his development of the color field painting technique. In this style, large, solid expanses of color dominated the canvas, creating an immersive and emotional experience for the viewer. Rothko's iconic rectangular forms, often referred to as "multiforms" or "color fields," were intended to evoke a profound, contemplative response.

His mature works, often consisting of two or three stacked rectangles of subtly shifting colors, are celebrated for their ability to elicit emotional and spiritual responses. Rothko believed that art should be a deeply immersive experience, and he sought to convey universal themes and emotions through his use of color.

The artist's iconic works, such as the Rothko Chapel paintings and his series of color field compositions, have left an indelible mark on the history of abstract art. Despite his success, Rothko struggled with personal and professional challenges. Tragically, he took his own life in 1970.
