Biography

Léopold François Kowalski was a former professor at the École des Beaux-Arts de Paris, where he taught Jean Pillard and Henri Lehmann.

He exhibited regularly in Paris at the Salon des Artistes Français, starting in 1881. He was elected a member of the Salon in 1883 and received an award in 1890 and a bronze medal in 1891.

In 1912, he moved to the region of Eure, where he lived until his death with his wife and daughter. He left behind some beautiful portraits of his loved ones.

His peasants from Normandy and Brittany often reveal a strong post-impressionist inspiration, especially in their use of light and reflections.
