Laurits Tuxen (1853–1927) was a Danish painter known for his versatile artistic talent, encompassing portraitures, historical compositions, and landscapes. Born on December 9, 1853, in Copenhagen, Denmark, Tuxen received his formal education at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts.

Tuxen's early career saw him studying and traveling extensively, gaining inspiration from the European art scene. He spent time in Paris, where he was influenced by the French academic tradition and the Barbizon School. These influences, combined with his Danish heritage, contributed to the development of his unique style.

A significant portion of Tuxen's oeuvre consists of portraits of royalty, nobility, and prominent figures of his time. He received commissions from various European courts, including those of Denmark, Britain, and Russia. His portrait of Queen Victoria of the United Kingdom is particularly notable, showcasing his ability to capture the regal demeanor of his subjects.

In addition to portraiture, Tuxen was also known for his historical and genre paintings. He often drew inspiration from Danish history and folklore, creating scenes that reflected a romanticized vision of the past. "The Wedding of Tsar Ivan the Terrible" and "Frederick VII's Visit to the National Exhibition at Copenhagen" are examples of his historical compositions.
