Biography

Marie Triepcke Krøyer Alfvén was a Danish painter, architect, and designer. She is best known for her portraits, still lifes, and interiors. She was also an important figure in the development of Danish design.

Born in Frederiksberg, Denmark, Krøyer Alfvén began painting at an early age. She studied at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen from 1888 to 1892. At the academy, she met Peder Severin Krøyer, one of the most successful Danish painters of his generation. They married in 1889 and settled in Skagen, a small fishing village in northern Jutland.

In Skagen, Krøyer Alfvén became associated with the Skagen Painters, a group of artists who were known for their realistic depictions of everyday life in the village. Krøyer Alfvén's own paintings are characterized by their delicate brushwork, muted colors, and intimate atmosphere.

In addition to her painting, Krøyer Alfvén was also an accomplished architect and designer. She designed several homes and interiors, and she also created furniture, textiles, and ceramics. Her designs are characterized by their simplicity, elegance, and functionality.

Krøyer Alfvén's work was highly regarded in her own time, but she has been somewhat overshadowed by her husband, Peder Severin Krøyer. In recent years, however, there has been a growing appreciation for her work, and she is now considered to be one of the most important Danish artists of the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
