Biography

Kristian Zahrtmann (1843–1917) was a Danish painter associated with the Symbolist and Modernist movements. Born on March 31, 1843, in Rønne, Denmark, Zahrtmann made a significant impact on Danish art through his distinctive style and contributions to the cultural and artistic milieu of his time.

Zahrtmann began his artistic education at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen, where he studied under influential Danish painter Wilhelm Marstrand. Early in his career, Zahrtmann was known for his historical and mythological paintings. However, his artistic journey took a notable turn when he encountered Symbolism, a movement that emphasized emotional and psychological themes in art.

In the late 19th century, Zahrtmann traveled to Paris, where he was exposed to the avant-garde art scene and the Symbolist movement. This experience profoundly influenced his work, leading him to adopt Symbolist principles characterized by a focus on subjective experiences, dreamlike imagery, and a departure from strict naturalism.

Zahrtmann's paintings often explored themes of sensuality, mythology, and human emotion.
