Born on May 17, 1858, in Kyiv, Ukraine (then part of the Russian Empire), Kryzhitsky demonstrated an early aptitude for art. He attended the Kyiv Drawing School, where his talent for landscape painting became evident. Seeking further refinement, he enrolled at the Imperial Academy of Arts in Saint Petersburg in 1877.

At the Academy, Kryzhitsky studied under renowned landscape artist Mikhail Clodt, whose emphasis on realistic representation and close observation of nature greatly influenced his work. In 1884, Kryzhitsky graduated with honors, receiving a gold medal for his excellence in landscape painting.
