Biography

Julius Paulsen (1860–1940) was a Danish painter known for his contributions to the Skagen Painters, a group of Scandinavian artists associated with the Skagen art colony in the northern part of Denmark. Born in Copenhagen, Paulsen received his artistic education at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen, where he studied under the influential Danish artist P.S. Krøyer.

The Skagen art colony, active in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, attracted artists seeking to capture the unique light and landscapes of the region. Julius Paulsen became associated with this group, which included prominent figures such as Anna and Michael Ancher.

Paulsen's works often depicted the coastal scenes and rural life around Skagen. He had a particular affinity for painting the play of light on water, and his seascapes and beach scenes are characterized by a luminous quality and a careful attention to atmospheric effects. His use of color and brushwork reflected the influence of French Impressionism, a style he encountered during his travels to Paris.
