Biography
John Frost (May 14, 1890 – June 5, 1937) was an American Impressionist painter known for his luminous and colorful landscapes of the Sierra Nevada Mountains and the deserts of Southern California. Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in 1890, Frost displayed an early aptitude for art and received training from his father, Arthur B. Frost, a well-known illustrator.

Frost's Impressionist paintings are characterized by their use of light, color, and loose brushwork to capture the fleeting impressions of the natural world. He often painted scenes of rolling hills, meandering rivers, and lush forests, infused with a sense of light, air, and movement. His paintings are also notable for their use of broken brushwork and divisionism, techniques that involve applying small dots of color to create a vibrant and shimmering effect.

Frost's paintings often depict the diverse landscapes of California, from the snow-capped peaks of the Sierra Nevada Mountains to the deserts and coastal plains of Southern California. He was particularly drawn to the effects of light and shadow in his paintings, and he often used a technique called "contre-jour," which involves painting against the light, to create a sense of depth and dimension.

Frost exhibited his work regularly at prestigious art institutions, including the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the San Francisco Art Institute, and the National Academy of Design. His paintings were met with critical acclaim, praised for their technical virtuosity, their ability to capture the essence of Impressionism and California landscape painting, and their contribution to American art history.

John Frost's legacy is one of artistic excellence and enduring appeal. His paintings continue to captivate audiences with their beauty, their ability to transport viewers to a time and place, and their contribution to the understanding of Impressionist art and the American landscape. He is considered to be one of the most significant American Impressionist painters of his generation.
