Biography

Johan Rohde (1856–1935) was a Danish painter and designer associated with the Arts and Crafts movement in Denmark. Born in Randers, Rohde initially studied law but soon shifted his focus to art, attending the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen. His early artistic endeavors included paintings, but he is perhaps best known for his contributions to applied arts and design.

Rohde played a significant role in the Arts and Crafts movement in Denmark, a cultural and aesthetic movement that emerged in the late 19th century as a reaction to industrialization. The movement aimed to revive craftsmanship, traditional techniques, and a connection to nature in the face of mass production. Rohde's commitment to these principles manifested in his work as a designer and decorative artist.
