Jefferson David Chalfant (1856-1931) was an American painter known for his masterful trompe-l'œil still life paintings. Born in Chester County, Pennsylvania, Chalfant moved to Wilmington, Delaware, in his early adulthood, where he would spend the rest of his life. He worked as a commercial painter of parlor car interiors before embarking on his career as a fine artist in the early 1880s.
Chalfant's trompe-l'œil paintings are characterized by their meticulous attention to detail and their ability to create the illusion of reality.
