Born in Moscow, Pokhitonov came from a family of artists and began his artistic education at the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture, and Architecture.

After completing his studies in Moscow, Pokhitonov continued his artistic training in Europe, spending time in Paris and studying at the Académie Julian. During his time in France, he was exposed to various artistic movements, including the Barbizon School and Impressionism, which left a lasting influence on his work.

Pokhitonov's paintings are characterized by a lyrical and poetic quality. He had a keen eye for capturing the play of light, the changing seasons, and the tranquility of the countryside. His landscapes often featured rural settings, depicting peasants working in fields, picturesque villages, and serene nature scenes.

While influenced by Impressionism, Pokhitonov maintained his distinctive style, combining elements of Russian Realism with the innovative techniques of his European counterparts. His use of color and brushwork conveyed a sense of mood and emotion, inviting viewers to immerse themselves in the beauty and tranquility of the Russian countryside.

One of Pokhitonov's notable works is "The Carpet-Bazaar," a painting that showcases his ability to depict the play of light on different textures. The work reflects the influence of both Russian and European artistic traditions.
