Biography

Hugo Simberg was a Finnish Symbolist painter and graphic artist known for his imaginative and often fantastical works that explored themes of life, death, and the mystical. Born on June 24, 1873, in Hamina, Finland, Simberg's art is characterized by a unique blend of Symbolism, folklore, and a profound connection to nature.

Simberg began his artistic education at the Finnish Fine Arts Association drawing school in 1889 and later continued his studies in Helsinki and Paris. His early works were influenced by the Symbolist movement, a style that sought to convey emotional and spiritual themes through symbolism and metaphor.

One of Simberg's most iconic and widely recognized paintings is "The Wounded Angel" (1903), a poignant work that depicts an angelic figure with bandaged eyes being comforted by two young boys in a desolate landscape. This painting, with its evocative symbolism, has become a symbol of Finnish art and is often interpreted as a meditation on suffering, compassion, and the human condition.
