Biography
Sir Henry Raeburn (1756–1823) was a Scottish portrait painter, widely regarded as one of the leading artists of his time. Born in Stockbridge, Edinburgh, Raeburn's artistic talents became apparent early in his life. He began his career as an apprentice to the goldsmith James Gilliland but soon shifted his focus to painting, initially working in portraiture miniatures.Raeburn's reputation as a portrait artist grew rapidly, and he became a prominent figure in Edinburgh's cultural and intellectual circles. He displayed a keen ability to capture the character and personality of his sitters, and his portraits were celebrated for their naturalism and psychological depth.
One of Raeburn's significant contributions to art was his role in popularizing the "swagger portrait" in Scotland. These portraits depicted the sitter in a relaxed and informal manner, often with elements of their surroundings included.
