Biography

Henrietta Rae (née Montalba, 1859–1928) was a British painter associated with the Victorian and Edwardian eras. Born in Hammersmith, London, she was part of a family with artistic inclinations. Henrietta Rae began her formal art education at the South Kensington Schools and later studied at the Royal Academy of Arts in London.

Rae gained recognition for her talent and was awarded a gold medal for her work by the Royal Academy in 1889. She specialized in historical and allegorical subjects, often depicting scenes from mythology, literature, and medieval themes. Rae's paintings were characterized by their detailed rendering, rich colors, and a blend of classical and romantic influences.

One of her notable works is "Psyche Before the Throne of Venus" (1894), which reflects her interest in mythological subjects. The painting showcases her skill in portraying the female form and creating a narrative infused with symbolism.

Henrietta Rae's career coincided with a time when female artists were gaining more visibility in the art world. She was part of the burgeoning women's suffrage movement and the broader push for women's rights in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
