Biography
Helen Maria Turner (November 13, 1858 – January 31, 1958) was an American painter and teacher known for her work in oils, watercolors, and pastels in which she created miniatures, landscapes, still lifes, and portraits, often in an Impressionist style.

Turner was born in Louisville, Kentucky while her parents, Mortimer Turner and Helen Maria Davidson, were on a long visit to family in the town. She was the great-granddaughter of John Pintard of New Orleans, granddaughter of a well-known doctor from New Orleans and daughter of a wealthy Louisiana businessman.

Turner showed an early aptitude for art. She studied drawing and painting with private teachers in New Orleans and New York City. In 1874, she traveled to Paris to study at the Académie Julian. During her time in Paris, she was exposed to the Impressionist movement, which had a profound influence on her work.

After returning to the United States in 1876, Turner settled in New Orleans. She quickly gained a reputation as a talented painter, and her work was exhibited in major museums and galleries around the country. She was also a popular teacher, and she taught painting to many of the leading artists of her generation.

Turner's work is characterized by its bright colors, loose brushwork, and sense of atmosphere. Her landscapes are often of the Louisiana bayou country, and her still lifes and portraits are of family and friends. She was particularly interested in capturing the effects of light and shadow, and her paintings are often suffused with a sense of warmth and serenity.

Turner was a member of several art societies, including the National Academy of Design, the Society of American Artists, and the Art Club of New York. She was also a founding member of the New Orleans Art Club.

Turner's work is held in several collections, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the National Gallery of Art, and the Whitney Museum of American Art. She is considered one of the leading American Impressionists of her generation.
