Movement definition
French academic art, emerging mainly in the 17th and 18th centuries, is characterized by a formal style, mastered technique and a rigorous approach to painting. Encouraged by the Paris Academy of Fine Arts, this art aimed to teach precise artistic standards and rules to artists. Academic painters sought to represent historical, mythological or religious subjects in a realistic manner, favoring composition, anatomical precision, and respect for classical techniques. French academic painting was imbued with traditional values and was often used to glorify history, morality, and ideal beauty. Academic artists conformed to established norms, which later led to reactionary movements, while other, more progressive art movements challenged and evolved outside of these academic principles.
