Biography

Francis Sydney Muschamp (1851-1929) was an English painter who is known for his figure, genre, and landscape paintings.

Born in Hull in 1851, Muschamp moved to London and exhibited his work at many renowned salons, including the Royal Academy in London, the Royal Society of Artists in Birmingham, and Manchester City Gallery, from 1870 to 1903.

Muschamp was strongly influenced by neoclassicism, especially the artists Frederic Leighton and Lawrence Alma-Tadema. Fascinated by the past and literature, particularly Shakespeare, many of his works display classical and baroque motifs, as well as literary-inspired topics, such as The Merchant of Venice and Ivanhoe.
