Ernest Lawson (1873–1939) was a Canadian-American painter known for his contributions to American Impressionism and the Ashcan School, a movement that emphasized depicting scenes of urban life with gritty realism. Born in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Lawson later immigrated to the United States and became a significant figure in the early 20th-century American art scene.

Lawson's artistic journey began with studies at the Art Students League of New York and later at the National Academy of Design. He was influenced by the teachings of William Merritt Chase and Robert Henri, pivotal figures in American art during the early 1900s.
