Emanuel A. Petersen painted not only nature, but also people's homes, such as turf houses and settlements. However, on closer inspection, these dwellings and the people placed in them are not central to the images, but rather act as extras.
The people in the paintings are also not portraits, but rather archetypes—a certain idea of Greenlanders that Petersen references repeatedly. For example, the woman in traditional Greenlandic clothing with a topknot is placed in many paintings, sitting or standing, often looking out at sea. However, the Nuuk Art Museum also owns some of Petersen's sketches in which he drew people with individual features, more like proper portraits.
The fact that people are more archetypes than portraits may be due to the artist's primary interest: painting nature—the beautiful and overwhelming, with its colors and light. The human being is therefore more of an eye-catcher, a way to create focal points and balance in the composition of the painting, rather than the essential element. They provide a direction or trace in the painting.
