Ellen Thesleff was a Finnish painter and a significant figure in the Finnish and Nordic art scene of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Born on April 9, 1869, in Helsinki, Finland, Thesleff made notable contributions to the Symbolist and Expressionist movements, and she is celebrated for her innovative approach to art.

Thesleff began her artistic studies at the Finnish Art Society's Drawing School in the late 1880s, and she later continued her education in Paris at the Académie Colarossi and the Académie Delécluse. In Paris, she was exposed to the avant-garde movements of the time, including Symbolism and Post-Impressionism, which had a profound impact on her artistic development.

In the early stages of her career, Thesleff primarily worked in a Symbolist style, exploring themes of mysticism and spirituality. Her paintings often featured dreamlike and visionary landscapes, reflecting the Symbolist emphasis on conveying emotional and spiritual states rather than strict representation.
