Biography
Elisabeth Warling was born in Stockholm, Sweden, in 1858. She was the daughter of confectioner Viktor Warling and Carin Sjögren.

Warling studied at the Technical School in Stockholm from 1875 to 1877 and at the Royal Swedish Academy of Fine Arts from 1877 to 1883. She also studied abroad, at the Académie Colarossi in Paris from 1875 to 1887, after receiving a scholarship from the Royal Academy.

Warling exhibited her work at the Royal Academy's Stockholm exhibition in 1887, the Nordic Exhibition in Copenhagen in 1888, and at several exhibitions of the Swedish Artists' Association in Stockholm from 1890. She also exhibited at the Swedish General Art Association's December Exhibition in 1911, at the Association of Swedish Women Artists' exhibitions in Stockholm in 1911 and in Lund in 1912, and at the Baltic Exhibition in 1914. A memorial exhibition of her work was organized by the Swedish Artists' Association at the Artists' House in Stockholm in 1916.

Warling's art is primarily composed of genre and portrait paintings in oil, gouache, watercolor, or pencil. She also executed figure studies and landscape paintings in smaller quantities. Together with her fellow student Charlotte Wahlström, she spent summers in Arild, Sweden, to paint landscapes. She also contributed humorous caricatures to the magazine Idun and to Anna Wahlenberg's book Prinsessans visa (The Princess's Song) in 1909.

Despite her refined sense of color, Warling did not achieve a major reputation during her lifetime. However, some of her portraits were well-received during her career, including her portraits of Gerda Kallstenius (1885) and State Councilor P.J. von Ehrenheim, as well as some sweet, childlike genre paintings.

Warling's work is represented in the collections of the Nationalmuseum in Stockholm, Uppsala University, Lund University, Karolinska Institutet, Västergötlands museum in Gothenburg, and Östergötlands museum in Linköping.
