Biography

Per Ekström (23 February 1844 – 21 January 1935) was a Swedish landscape painter known for his atmospheric scenes with sunsets, in barren or deserted places. Born on the island of Öland in Sweden in 1844, Ekström displayed an early aptitude for art and received training at the Royal Swedish Academy of Fine Arts under the guidance of Carl Johan Wahlbom and August Malmström.

Ekström's paintings are characterized by their soft, muted colors, their attention to detail, and their ability to convey the atmosphere and drudgery of rural life. He often depicted scenes of barren landscapes, desolate fields, and solitary figures, infused with a sense of melancholy and quietude. His paintings are also notable for their use of sfumato, a technique that involves blending colors subtly to create a hazy, atmospheric effect.

Ekström was particularly drawn to the effects of light and shadow in his paintings. He often used a technique called "contre-jour," which involves painting against the light, to create a sense of depth and dimension. He also used a technique called "glazing," which involves layering thin washes of transparent paint over each other, to create a luminous and atmospheric effect.

Ekström exhibited his work regularly at prestigious art institutions, including the Salon des Artistes Français, the Royal Swedish Academy of Fine Arts, and the Nationalmuseum. His paintings were met with critical acclaim, praised for their technical virtuosity, their ability to capture the essence of the Swedish landscape, and their contribution to the understanding of Swedish art.

Per Ekström's legacy is one of artistic excellence and enduring appeal. His paintings continue to captivate audiences with their beauty, their ability to evoke a sense of place and time, and their contribution to the understanding of Swedish landscape painting. He is considered to be one of the most significant Swedish landscape painters of his generation.
