Movement definition
Dutch Impressionism, a branch of impressionism that emerged in the Netherlands in the 19th century, focuses on capturing the effects of natural light and changing colors in painting. Dutch Impressionist artists adopted freer painting techniques, using rapid brushstrokes and expressive splashes of color to depict landscapes, urban scenes, and fleeting moments of everyday life. They sought to capture the essence of the moment and convey bright and vibrant atmospheres. Although sharing similarities with French Impressionism, Dutch Impressionism was influenced by the particular light of the Netherlands and often featured waterscapes, fields and rural scenes typical of the region. This movement marked an important milestone in the history of Dutch painting, exploring new artistic avenues and bringing a new perspective to the art of visual representation.
