Biography

Henri Julien Félix Rousseau (1844–1910), commonly known as Le Douanier Rousseau, was a French post-impressionist painter who achieved fame for his vibrant and imaginative jungle scenes and naive style. Born in Laval, France, Rousseau began painting as a hobby while working as a toll collector, earning him the nickname "Le Douanier" (the customs officer).

Rousseau was largely self-taught and did not receive formal art training, which contributed to his distinctive and unconventional style. His works often feature lush landscapes, exotic animals, and dreamlike atmospheres, reflecting his fascination with nature and the exotic. Despite his lack of academic training, Rousseau's paintings display a keen sense of color and a unique approach to composition.

One of his most famous works, "The Dream" (1910), exemplifies Rousseau's ability to create fantastical scenes that blur the lines between reality and imagination.
