Biography
Dora Wahlroos (December 19, 1870 – March 21, 1947) was a Finnish painter who was a prominent figure in the en plein air movement towards the end of the 19th century. She was known for her vibrant landscapes, portraits, and genre scenes.

Born in Pori, Finland, Wahlroos showed an early interest in art. She studied at the Turku Drawing School from 1886 to 1888, and then continued her studies with the Finnish painter Victor Westerholm from 1889 to 1890. In the early 1890s, she traveled to Paris to study at the Académie Julian, where she was exposed to the Impressionist movement.

Wahlroos's work was deeply influenced by her experiences in Paris. She adopted the Impressionists' use of bright colors, loose brushwork, and open-air composition. Her landscapes, in particular, capture the beauty of the Finnish countryside with its lush forests, sparkling lakes, and rolling hills.

In addition to landscapes, Wahlroos also painted portraits and genre scenes. Her portraits are characterized by their psychological insight and their sensitive portrayal of the sitter's personality. Her genre scenes often depict scenes of everyday life in Finland, such as women working in the fields or children playing in the streets.

Wahlroos exhibited her work widely in Finland and abroad. She was a member of the Finnish Artists' Association and the jury for the Ateneum art exhibition in 1900. She also participated in the Paris Salon in 1892 and the World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago in 1893.

Wahlroos's work is held in several collections, including the Ateneum Art Museum in Helsinki, the Finnish National Gallery, and the Tampere Art Museum. She is considered one of the leading Finnish painters of her generation.
